A number of recent research results, reports and analyses indicate that further development of organic and agro-ecological agriculture in the Global South represents a potential solution to the current food crisis, as well as points to future poverty alleviation and sustainability in terms of improved soil fertility and safe food for the families and the local markets, with no pesticide residuals. The yield of organically grown land is higher than when using traditional farming methods, among others because organic and agro-ecological agriculture involves the use of intercropping, crop rotation and focuses on improving soil fertility. When handled in a socially responsible manner, organic export production can give increased income to families and local communities and in this way contribute to improved livelihood.
Organic Denmark has worked for organic farming development during the past three decades, with main focus on Denmark. Global Organic is a part of Organic Denmark, and wants to support the development of organic and agro-ecological farming globally through collaboration and interaction with Danish NGOs, Danida and organic sister organisations, particularly in the Global South.
Global Organic has together with an organic sister organisation in Africa, taken the initiative to formulate a project with focus on the farmer-to-farmer development (Farmer-Field-School) of organic farming approaches. We applied for funds to this project in the winter 2008-2009, and see this as a concrete example of how we want to work with partner organisations for development of improved organic agriculture.
The Global Organic Network consists of approximately 40 members of Organic Denmark with interest in this type of work. In our group, we find farmers, consumers, traders, previous organisation workers for NGOs in the Global South as well as people with other occupations and backgrounds. We represent a broad spectrum of people and competences.
